THE STORMONT VOLUNTEERS

The Trust remains indebted to all the Stormont Volunteers, who supervise the exhibitions in the Stormont Studio and enable the Permanent Collection to be viewed by the Public.

ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A STORMONT VOLUNTEER?

The Rye Art Gallery needs volunteers to enable
the public and members to view current exhibitions of the Permanent Collection which is rich in works by local and nationally renowned artists such as Burra, Nash, Piper, Sutherland, Hitchens and Bloomsbury artists. Volunteers
enjoy a pleasant working environment in the heart of the Stormont Studio, enabling them to interact with the visitors whilst maintaining security.

Some questions generally asked by would-be volunteers are:-

What would I be asked to do? We need volunteers to greet the public, offer general information about exhibitions, answer questions about the Gallery and maintain basic records and visitor numbers.

How much time would I have to give? We realise that your time is precious so that is up to you, but once (or twice) a month for a morning or afternoon session is generally the norm. Once you have made contact, the volunteer rota which is kept in the Stormont Studio is available for you to sign up for sessions. It is open Thursday to Saturday 10.30 a.m. - 1p.m. and 2 - 5p.m. and Sunday 12 noon - 4p.m. Days and times might vary a little according to the time of year.

I go away quite a lot, does that matter? We know that volunteers like to be able to help out but like to be able to keep a flexible diary. The rota system allows for that by enabling you to sign when YOU are free. If you are unable to fulfil the session for which you have signed you would simply sign out and resign for another session. If you cannot go to the Stormont, you can ring the Gallery or the Stormont Coordinator to do this for you.

What happens if I cannot answer the visitors’ questions? Volunteer social/ informative evenings are sometimes held before a new exhibition as opportunities for volunteers to be better informed and to pose questions. In addition
for each exhibition, notes are provided as guidance. You will be taken through the details on your first visit.

When it is quiet is there anything else to do? To be vigilant is most important, but sometimes we might ask you to help with the Gallery’s and Friends’ mail or other light tasks that arise from time to time.
