To coincide with what is being billed by the Pallant House gallery as "The first major exhibition for 25 years of the highly individual work of the popular British artist Edward Burra (1905-1976), focussing on the artist's sharply-observed social commentary and unique draftsmanship through a selection of around 70 major works from across the artist's career. The show will feature Burra's iconic images of everyday people at leisure in bars and clubs, the black culture of Harlem in the 1930s, and the vibrant sub-culture of harbours and ports across Southern Europe, his macabre dancing skeletons and stunning late landscapes. Exploring the artist's involvement with other artists such as Paul Nash and the British avant-garde including Unit One and the English Surrealists in the 1930s." Rye Art Gallery mounts some enhancements to its standing Burra exhibition.

A video interview with Edward Burra dating from the 1970s is now on vimeo.
